Olsen Surgical has been owned and operated by the current owner, Gary Olsen, for over 20 years. Olsen Surgical was founded by Gary's great grandfather as a surgical and dental instrument sharpening and repair company. In 1879 Ole Olsen, a 15-year-old journeyman surgical instrument maker from Norway, made the journey by ship from New York around the horn of South America to San Francisco. In 1880, 16-year-old Ole Olsen started making and repairing surgical instruments in the San Francisco area, working out of his home. Ole's son, Edward Olsen, continued on in the family tradition of quality and excellent customer service. Edward's son, Eugene, took over the business for his father after serving in the Second World War as a B25 pilot. The current owner, Gary, loved to help his father in the shop when he was a young boy. In 1973, Eugene Olsen moved into the field of electrosurgical instrument manufacturing, while Gary Olsen kept the traditional family business of hard work, high quality and value as a standard for surgical instrument sharpening and repair service as set by his great grandfather. Gary worked for his father in research and development for the electrosurgical industry and repairs electrosurgical instruments today. The present Mr. Olsen started his training as a surgical instrument technician at the age of ten and now has over 40 years in the business. By using the latest materials and techniques Olsen Surgical is able to provide the finest end product available. Olsen Surgical has a program of continuous quality improvement through developing new and better techniques and using the best technologies as they become available. The family legacy has continued, father to son for 120 years.
